Navigating the summer job market

Most people believe summer is the worst time to conduct a job search. Between college students and high school students eating up the market, vacations, lagging budgets, etc. hiring would seem to lag during the summer making it a bad time to conduct a job search. In reality, summer is a very good time to job hunt. Here are some tips to make your summer-time job search more effective: Spiff up your telephone skills. With people on vacation, you will be receiving more voice mail messages than usual as you try to reach people in your job search network. Always make calls with a notepad or organizer nearby and take note of when your contacts will be back in the office. Set an email up to be delivered the day *after* the person’s return and set a reminder to call again the second day after he/she returns. Make sure you leave a clear, informative voice mail. Make sure you state your name twice, your telephone number twice, and your message once. Give a good time for a call-back. The following is a general formula for an effective voice mail. “Hello , this is . My number is XXX-XXX-XXXX. I am calling because . The best time to get back in touch with me is . Again, this is and my number is XXX-XXX-XXXX. Thank you!” Always include your area code with your telephone number. Many times, people cannot return calls because they are not sure where the caller is calling from. Giving your time zone helps the recipient of the message know where you are located and helps them know exactly when to call you back. Speak slowly and clearly, especially if English is not your native tongue. Spell your name if the spelling is not easily recognizable. Provide more than one number if possible and repeat both of them twice. Take advantage of summer social activities for your job search. Most jobs are filled through word-of-mouth. That means the more people with whom you talk, the more effective your job search. Summertime is chock-full of social activities from picnics to family reunions to ball games. Make the most of gatherings of people to gather information for your search and extend your network toward your target companies. Volunteer. Summer seems packed with opportunities to volunteer. Volunteering not only gains additional network contacts for your search but it has many emotional rewards, too. Looking for a job, especially for those who have been engaged in long searches (more than 3 months) is emotionally exhausting. The warm fuzzies you receive from volunteering go a long way toward boosting your mental attitude. Be persistent. Since many job searchers slack off in the summer thinking they are wasting their time, your competition is less. Take advantage of that and redouble your efforts in your search.

Domain name how to pick one

Picking a domain name should be easy, right? Why, I’ll just use my business name. Not so fast, Sparky. A good bit of thought should be given to selecting a domain name. A Cautionary Note Picking a domain name is like getting married. You are going to have to stick with it till the bitter end. People that use your site will come to know it by the domain name. Repeat visitors will often simply type in the domain name to get to the site, better known as “type in traffic”. As an example, do you search for “Amazon” when you want to buy a book or do simply type in amazon. com? If Amazon were to change its domain name to Desert, there would be a lot of confusion. The same goes with your domain. Once you pick something, stick with it. Your Choices Well, the obvious choice is your business name, but it may not be the best. There are four significant issues to consider. First, is there something about your business name that makes using it as a domain an unwise choice? This situation typically arises if you have a long business name or have plural words. “Halstatt’s Rip’n Marketing Campaigns, Inc.” is going to be a horrible domain name. Clients are going to find it difficult to type in such a domain name. Double letter problems are a second issue that is entirely unique to the Internet. What if Sams Salon wants to use its business name as a domain? The “s” at the end of first word and beginning of the second can cause confusion. Is the domain name Samssalon. com or Samsalon. com? Confusing your users is a bad way to run a site. The third issue concerns the nature of your site and search engine optimization. If you are shooting for a particular keyword phrase, you may be better off using that keyword phrase in your domain name. Google, for instance, looks at the domain name when evaluating a site. If the words in your domain name are spaced with dashes, many believe it will help in the ranking process. This is why you see so many xxx-xxxx-xxx. com domain names on the net. If your business focuses on a very specific area, strong consideration should be given to using relevant keywords in your domain name. Finally, your domain name should end in “.com” and I don’t want to hear any argument or see any rolling of the eyes. The simple fact is that when people think of sites, they always type in. com. Yes, there are other extensions and. us,.net,.biz, etc., may seem unique, but it kills your traffic. Pavlov and his dog experiments had it right. People have been mentally conditioned to type in. com, so don’t select any other ending. If you do, a smart competitor will register the. com version of your name to get some free traffic. If you are really lucky, a porn site will do it! Take a breath before you select a domain name. Like a spouse, it can be either a good or bad choice.

Part time internet marketing with a full time approach

The deluge of people wanting to make money on the internet has exploded in the past few years. It's getting to the point where anyone that has a computer has heard of or has been tempted by such income. From affiliate marketing to playing around on e-bay, "wanna-be" Internet marketers and online business entrepreneurs are abundant. This explosion has in part, been fueled by entrepreneurs that have "day jobs." Internet marketing and online business, "on the side" is commonplace with today's "day job" work force. The online business explosion is also due to the myriad of opportunities available, the tools available and all of the knowledge right at our mouse tips. Another driver is the whole notion of continuous learning. These same entrepreneurs from all walks of life realize that learning the internet, learning marketing, learning about the tools and information at hand is a continuous learning experience.

That is, if they want to be a player and do things right. New methods, new tools, new information are emerging daily. Staying on top of the latest trends is just as important as learning a fundamental base. Internet marketing and having an online business can be done part time and appear as if it is full time.

These part-timers can have that full-time business, "on the side." In the virtual world, the behind the scenes operations are numerous and by definition do not have to be viewed as part time. The key is to use a full time, automated system that pays the proper amount of attention to prospects and customers. The number one reason people don't buy immediately from an online business or website is that they don't see value right away. Sometimes value is there but the casual browser misses it. What is needed is an automatic system that can contact the browser again and again to communicate the marketing message, its benefits and most importantly its ultimate value.

This automatic system gives the marketer the full time attention necessary to sell online. One way to do this is with an autoresponder system. An autoresponder is best described as a "fax on demand system for e-mail." It is an automatic email sender that sends your marketing and sales message to those expressing interest in what you offer. The exciting part is that it can continuously send follow up emails to the prospects as frequently as you designate. If the autoresponder is framed properly, your chances of getting an order increase with each message and/or each contact to a prospect. This is known as a sequential autoresponder and is the basis of all automatic full time Internet marketing systems. Once you get attention, interest and desire from your browser and they take the action to sign up for something, you then respond to their request with more attention, on a regular, full time basis. A good autoresponder is worth its weight in gold.

Many times you will be thankful for email being sent on your behalf because you don't have to take the time to send manually. The autoresponder sends it but makes you appear as if you were paying full time attention to your customers. Another automatic step of internet marketing offering full time attention is the one step autoresponder. "Send a blank e-mail to (xxxx@xxxx. com) to receive a free special report on (a subject designated by you)." This comes in real handy in an e-zine for instance. You can shorten the ezine articles, (which internet browsers and readers prefer) by stating, "…for the rest of this article send a blank email to xxxx2@xxx. com." This is a time message autoresponder. Your reader gets the article in his or her email box and you get notified of someone with a particular interest (not to mention permission to market to subsequently). We could spend all of our time here just on this one powerful, automatic, full time weapon, the autoresponder, but there are other parts to your automatic, full time, attention giving, marketing system.

1. Pop Up Windows - one strategy that utilizes automation is the exit pop up box. Be creative in the message to try and snag a person that has already decided to leave your site. Use a free offer or reduced price or a bribe to get the browser to take one more look, one more consideration and maybe even a purchase. After all when the browser is leaving, you have lost the sale. Pop Up boxes try one more time to snag their interest. Any sale from a last ditch effort is like a bonus to you. They were leaving anyway so be creative. 2. Free e-course - a variation of autoresponder emails, sent out on regular intervals can be called or marketed as an e-course. Remember, getting an interested party's email address is gold in the world of internet marketing. These interested parties are more likely to buy from you, now or later, as you market to them over and over. 3. Check out http:// Aweber. com for a recommended autoresponder. They offer Unlimited autoresponders, follow ups, email broadcasts, and even offer a free test drive. Some web hosting services and shopping cart systems also offer autoresponders. 4. Autoresponders, e-courses, follow up messages and pop up boxes can be set up to: Offer a free subscription to your ezine. Offer a sample or trial Convert prospects to paying clients Create loyal fans Offer free special reports positioning you as an expert Giving something of value away for free to keep interest All of the above systems are your automated sales force. Because you do all the work preparing and setting up, once they are unleashed, they do all the work for you, automatically, 24/7. You go to your day job knowing your automatic sales force is hard at work. The easiest, fastest and most cost effective way to increase your online business is to increase your follow up efforts. Anything set up automatically to do this is the answer. Anything set up to offer full time attention is also the answer; all while you are at your day job.

Email etiquette

Today we are going to discuss one of my pet peeves, and learn about email etiquette. Those who don't BCC send, an email nightmare. When you send your friends an email showing all email in the to: or CC line and those people forward that email to their address book of friends, suddenly 500 people now have your friends email addresses. These email addresses remain in the email, because most people don't do their part to edit them out. So when you forward an email that has 200 emails in the two field and your friend forwards it on to 300 of their friends. You now have an email with 500 emails. Today I received just that email and I was able to harvest 500 email addresses from that one email that was carelessly sent by a friend of mine.

So now 500 people I didn't know had my email address. Ever wonder why you receive so much spam, adds to enlarge your penis or adds saying you have been approved for a mortgage? This is one reason. I do not believe for one moment that you would hand out your friends home address or phone number to people that you don’t know? The same consideration should really be taken into thought when sending out email. You have the resources right there at your finger tip to protect your friends and family from spammers, stalkers, etc. So please use the BCC, instead of To or CC when sending group e-mails. Don't ever give out another person's e-mail address without their permission. Like I said above an email address should be treated just as a phone number or home address is treated.

So how does on BCC send. I have collected a few resources to help you. How to BCC send in Yahoo http://help. yahoo. com/help/us/mail/send/send-01.html How to BCC send in hotmail Example: If you were to enter these email addresses: 'To:' xxxxxx@todays-woman. net 'CC:' 'BCC:'xxx@hotmail. com , xx@aol. com, xxxx@yahoo. com Each recipient will receive a copy of your email but it would look like this From: "Your Name here" . I hope this article was of some help. Now please do your part in helping spam stay out of my inbox, as well as your friends and family inbox by BCC sending.

One is technical the other is Marketing related. How do I make my hyperlink open in a new window and why do I want that to happen? HERE”S HOW in response to a question I received recently about creating a ‘Download page’ It answers the above questions and gives some other valuable tips. TIP #1 Hi, I clicked on your XXXXX link and found that it worked fine. However, it loaded the XXXXX page in the same window as yours, so I was taken away from your download page, very inconvenient for someone trying to download. To fix it do this: Add “target=_blank” into the code after the URL. Make sure you save your original page first and work on a copy, then when your copy is done upload it and test it, then save it as the original on your desk top, then upload the new original to your server. Done! (In this example I use [ ] instead of V brackets, to make this publishable.) [a href="http:// xxx. com/products“target="blank"]Click here[/a] Tip #2 Here’s a friendly way make prospects SAVE YOUR EBOOK full of your links on their computer. If you don't do this they might just look at the ebook in their browser and then close it. You will have lost them maybe for ever, but if you made them save it onto their hard drive; you will always get another chance, even if they remove themselves from your mailing list. The links are still in the E book on their computer, and who knows when they might open it again and go click! HERE’S HOW: Just use this as a guide. Step Two: "NAME OF THE EBOOK" ‘Right Click Here’ and select 'Save Target as' or 'Save Link as' (Mozilla) option from the pop-up window to download the eBook. Then Save the eBook to a location on your hard drive where you can easily find it. Make a note of the location that you've saved it to so you can easily access it again in the future. NOTE: Add the "target=_blank" code to the "right click here" link, so that if they just left click and load to their browser at least your download page (with a link back to home) is still on their desk top! WHY HAVE LINKS OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW? Adding "target=_blank" to all links on a home page will keep the home page on the prospects desk top for as long as possible this will increase the chances of a sign up! WARNING!!! DON’T use the code to open a new window on links back to your home page this will just annoy people. Below, is a complete template for a typical download page. I have used ‘’ to indicate the hyperlinks. You should use “target=_blank” on all links except the one that takes them home. TEMPLATE Step One: You will need XXsoftwareXX to read the E-book. If you do not have it installed on your computer, Please ‘CLICK HERE’ to get the software. Step Two: "NAME OF THE EBOOK" ‘Right Click Here’ and select 'Save Target as' or 'Save Link as' (Mozilla) option from the pop-up window to download the eBook. Step Three: Save the eBook to a location on your hard drive where you can find it easily. Make a note of the location where you saved it, so that you can easily access it again in the future. Your perfect golf vacation step two

You are only going to have one major golf vacation with your pals per year. Make it the best possible by designing it yourself. Forget the standard golf package and do it yourself. In our last article we got to the minus two months point of your schedule. You have researched and found the ideal location, picked out the perfect house, sent out the word to your pals, and settled on the dates. By this time, you should have a confirmed group, any of which would just as soon lose their right arm as miss the event. Let's lock in the rental house. You DO need to get this done as early as you can. If you are setting up your vacation during the off-season like I do, you are in the driver’s seat.

Talk directly to the property manager and negotiate a better rate. Here is a summary of my discussion a few weeks ago. "Hey, Tiffany. Randall here. It's that time again but our group is smaller. We really like the house at ….. but it is more than we need. We will be staying a full week. I figured the owner would rather have a bird in the hand and rent the house for a full week instead of taking the chance of renting it for just a couple days or not at all. We can afford $xxxx. I can pay you today." The result of this little conversation was that she immediately lopped twenty percent off the advertised rate! You will never know until you ask. Shoot for about a thirty percent reduction and go from there. I slapped the deposit on my credit card and emailed the group. (Yes, I was looking for praise.) You can dust off the smaller details like arranging linens (if not provided in the rate) and final payment later. Time to grab tee times. What I recommend is setting up early morning tee times for each day. You will have to get up earlier than you may like, but scheduling tee times around 8:00 to 8:30AM will accomplish several things, including: - Being close to first off the box on rain or frost delays (allowing a second 18). - Finishing your round early enough to grab a second 18 with lunch in between 18’s. - Allowing easier to change to later tee times if desired rather than to move them earlier. Over the Internet and by talking with local pros on the phone, you have come up the courses you want to play. As with the house, you DO need to get this done as early as you can so that you can get the tee times you want. When scheduling tee times, I prefer talking directly to the head pro. In general, you will find more flexibility on prices. Other bonuses like getting a second set of tee times while only paying for a replay fee are easier. The head honcho is also more likely to bend the rules to allow advanced tee times if you are beyond the time window normally allowed. Granted, this may be your first time in the location you picked, but you can use about the same language as I do. I have just locked in our tee times for February. I associate myself with a golf course to let them know I am a "player" and the pros seem to be more deferential in talking with a "player". Here is a summary of a standard call: "Hey Bucky, Randall from Snee Farm here. It’s getting to be that time of the year again for our annual golf vacation. You have always treated us so well and given us such a great rate in the past. The guys love the challenge of your outstanding spread. I was just wondering if you fit us in again on February 23rd. We are looking to play 36 and would appreciate anything you could do for us." With that or something similar as an opener, I forecast that you WILL get a great rate from most of the courses. Don’t make a second set of tee times at this point unless you get them for just the replay fee. If you are playing during the on-season and want to play 36, you may have to make and pay for a guaranteed set of afternoon tee times. Some of the courses may have events already scheduled when you want to play that particular course. You may have to juggle this slightly and change already made tee times, so complete your tee time set up within a couple days. Now you have your group, your house and your tee times. It is time to get down to real business. Now is the time to get the financial commitment. Send an email spelling out the accommodations and the tee times. Ask for your troops to send you at least half of what the final cost per man will be. Our total per man is normally around $900 for all the lodging, transportation, golf, food and beverages for the week. Dining. In general we fix whatever breakfast we personally want, make sandwiches to eat between rounds, and fix our own gourmet supper (with loads of snacks to wreck our appetites during the entire day and night). You can see our 2006 evening meals by clicking on 2006 Schedule at the sample website http:// eye-mind-tricks. com/golf . To support all this, you will need to know what the group wants and prepare a shopping list. This year, I used a free survey website and built a fill-in-the-blank survey for the troops. You can see that at: http:// surveymonkey DOT com/s. asp? u=256691624905 (Replace the "DOT" with a ".") You can use surveymonkey like that or ask the same questions in an email. To give you an idea of what your shopping list will look like for a group of eight and assuming you follow our general plan, I put a close copy of last year’s shopping list at the above eye-mind-tricks website. Substitute the word "shop" for "golf" to see it. With your shopping list built, you will either grab the goodies before the flights of the group arrive if you live locally, or have the troops assist on the way to your house. You are now at the minus one month point of building the perfect golf vacation. The next article will provide recipes, administration details, entertainment ideas, and odds and ends.

Can the internet businesses survive without affiliate marketing

What is an affiliate program? I’ve been bombarded with this question from Internet business newbies since I got myself involved in this very interesting but challenging online business. Many years ago, ever since we started manufacturing products for sale in the offline physical world, we had been having sales agents representing different manufacturers to help the latter to expand their markets. The agents conclude sales without carrying inventory, handling payments, signing contracts, sorting, packing and shipping of the products. Their main focus had been to make the sale by getting the orders from the prospects and existing customers, which were then processed by the manufacturers or merchants. In the Internet online world we have affiliates instead of agents. Affiliates are highly targeted pay-for-performance sales agents. There are also some forms of Internet advertising that rewards the affiliates for driving traffic to the advertiser i. e. the manufacturers or the affiliate program owners. The advertiser pays the affiliates to place a link on their website, and the affiliate sends traffic to the advertiser in return. In other words, it's about the affiliates receiving commissions for helping in making the sales. The most common reward is pay-for-sale, where the merchant pays the affiliates who referred the paying customers. Affiliates are being considered as a complementary but very important sales channel although the merchants themselves continue to get their own direct traffic in making their own sales. The affiliates do not have to suffer from the occasional sleepless nights worrying about the processing of orders, packing and shipping etc because this are being taken care of by the merchants who usually have an effective tracking system to determine which affiliates drive which orders to them starting with the so-called affiliate links. These are the links that the affiliates put on their websites, newsletters, ezines or emails. How does an affiliate link look like? You may ask. The most common affiliate link is embedded in the linking URL. For example, if you see a link like "http:// abcmerchant. com/?xxxx=3456", you can be quite sure that the affiliate with the ID (identification) 3456 will receive money from ABC Merchant when someone places his order after clicking that link. Other affiliate links are more complex and encrypted with some sites having their links masked so that the prospects won’t be able to detect that the URL they’re clicking is an affiliate link. An excellent example of an affiliate program is that of Amazon. com who happens to have one of the oldest affiliate programs in the Internet. Other possible affiliate programs are as follows: 1) "Pay per click" - the merchant pays the affiliates for the driving the traffic and the resulted orders to them. 2) "Pay per lead" - the merchant pays the affiliates for directing the prospects to register their interest with a possibility of making the sales later. 3) "Pay per subscription" – if the merchant has a recurring revenue from the customer’s repeated orders, the affiliates will benefit accordingly. Why bother about Affiliate Marketing at all then? The following are some of the reasons why Internet marketers the world over swear by the affiliate marketing as a form of their Internet advertisement and strategy: 1. Low budget Many are hesitant to venture into any home based businesses because of the lack of fund or the unwillingness to part with money due to uncertainties. In affiliate marketing, you don't have to invest a lot financially to start pulling in profits. 2. No inventories There is no need to keep and manage an inventory as this would be taken care of by the merchant. 3. Passive income through leverage One could copy what the truly wealthy people are doing (or rather not doing). They earn their income through various leverage strategies which allow them to make money while they’re sleeping, meddling with hobbies, or having vacation in far away places such as the beautiful beaches in Hawaii or Malaysia. Unlike a paid job, affiliates could just drive traffic to the merchants’ websites without having to sweat after having provided them your ad copy and links. 4. Minimal risk The main reason for most successful Internet marketer's extensive use of affiliate marketing is the low-risk nature of the program. This is especially attractive to those with low budget for advertising 5. Globalisation With affiliate marketing, you are dealing with an unending global market place. All you have to do is study, research and select a niche product or service and prepare all the necessary marketing tools for your affiliates to direct traffic from just about anywhere around the world to your website. 6. Getting paid while you sleep This system allows you to “recruit” thousands of “salesmen” who are willing to work for you 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The best part is the fact that they’re willing to do so for nothing! This is a system that allows you to switch your business to “Autopilot” mode so that you could continue to earn money whether you’re awake, asleep or holidaying in Bangkok or Penang. It is a system that allows you to work from home or some places 10,000 km or more away from home. Having said this, it must be stated that not all affiliate programs are successful. Many affiliate program owners fail because of their lack of the necessary investment, for instance, the merchant needs to invest in an effective tracking system, which is usually an outsourced affiliate network or an in-house affiliate software system. Another factor to consider is having sufficient human resources to recruit, manage, and motivate the affiliates with the right technical support and remuneration. Without a good support system in place, the affiliates will not stay long enough to produce the desired results. Most online businesses use affiliate marketing strategy to sell their products which could include physical products, software or e-books. Service industry can also benefit from an affiliate program via a pay-per-lead program. Before a merchant could establish an affiliate strategy, he should consider many factors among them are the answers to the following questions: 1) What are the benefits to the affiliates? What commission rate should be offered to affiliates to attract them and motivate them? 2) What are the competitors doing? Are there any innovative strategies that could produce product differentiation? 3) What pay-for-performance model should be adopted? 4) How to manage the affiliates and motivate them? 5) How are the affiliates paid using the latest technology without affecting their moral due, for instance, to delayed payment of their commission? 6) What affiliate software tracking systems are available and which is the best for the purpose? A well designed affiliate program could bring very explosive positive results to the affiliate program owners’ business and the stream of income for the affiliates themselves. An affiliate strategy done right can increase online sales tremendously. There are well over 30 affiliate software packages to choose from. There are also more than 200 features in affiliate software and network offerings. With all these possibilities, no wonder many success stories of the Internet businesses today are the results of suitable application of affiliate programs. Indeed, most online businesses could not survive today without effective affiliate programs.
