Shipping containers for emergency housing

: Natural disasters leave victims who continue to suffer long after the media turns its focus elsewhere. People who lose their homes and all of their possessions may feel lucky to be alive, but they need a place where to continue to live. Recently, some architects and others interested in providing temporary, emergency housing have begun to make use of a resource that seems plentiful – metal shipping containers. The idea started in part due to the overflow of containers that are piling up in harbors along both coasts of the United States. In New York alone, over a million of these empty containers are stored in the harbor and along the Jersey turnpike. There are two main reasons for this excess of containers:

  • We have been importing more than we have been exporting. So the containers come in full of imported goods but then we aren't filling them back up and circulating them back into the world market.
  • Companies don't have much of an incentive to return the containers to their source. For example, in China, it costs about $2,300 to make one of these containers. But for a US company to ship an empty container back to China would cost about $900. So instead of spending the money, US companies have simply begun to store them.
So the argument has been made that these containers could be turned into shelter for use in emergencies. In light of the recent aftermath of hurricane Katrina, there could actually be immediate need for such shelters. Ideally, the converted containers could be delivered by truck to the actual home sight of the disaster victims.

They could live in the shelter on their own land, using the utilities that are already supplied to that lot until their home is rebuilt. The shelters would be preferable to tents because of their steel beam construction. They can endure strong winds, snow and even wildfires. However, the first step is to get the containers converted. At the moment, there are a few problems that those performing the conversion face.

First of all, the containers are only 8 feet wide which doesn't create much room. Cutting away sides and joining 2 containers together can solve this problem. Windows and other holes for utilities have to be cut with a blow torch, requiring specialized labor. So, at the moment, the cost of converting these shipping containers would be prohibitive. But there is a solution to this problem.

Proponents of the idea, including professors, students, nonprofit organizations and some members of the building industry suggest that the containers should be designed so that conversion is possible at some point in the future. They could have removable panels that would not endanger the integrity of the container when it's being used for shipping and could be easily removed when the container is needed in an emergency for shelter. When needed, these containers could then be transported and set up much faster and would be a much more comfortable solution for the victims. There are still many questions about this idea, mostly about how to get enough interest from the government agencies that are responsible for disaster relief as well as from the companies that manufacture and use the containers. For example, who will pay for the changes needed to the equipment and processes that the manufacturers might use? What type of notification and organization system will be put into place to direct the distribution and installation of the shelters? What happens to the containers once the victims have acquired permanent housing? And again, who will pay for the delivery and removal of the units?

All of these and other questions would need to be answered before the idea could be put into widespread use. Although the idea is still in the formative stages, it definitely shows promise.

The history of acorn stair lifts

Stair lifts have increased in popularity over the last few years. This is in part because of reductions in manufacturing costs that have been passed down to the consumer. A stair chair, or stair lift, is a device that is used to allow people to easily traverse a set of stairs. It consists of a chair or small platform that travels up and down the stairs via a track that is secured to the stairs or walls. There are several companies that sell stair lifts, and one of the more popular companies is Acorn Stair Lifts. Acorn Stair Lifts is an international company that employs over 800 people worldwide . Created in 1992, Acorn began by buying new and used stair lifts and reselling them. They completely refurbished the used ones at their facility in the UK, but were quickly overwhelmed by the demand for their products. In order to fulfill all their orders, and to guarantee that the customer was receiving a well made product, they began manufacturing their own stair lifts, and have continued this tradition since. While Acorn Stair Lifts had been rebuilding other company's stair chairs, they had become alarmed by the number of design flaws in these products.

By manufacturing their own, they were able to guarantee high levels of safety and reliability. Their goal was to provide a stair liftthat was easy to install, simple to use, and required little maintenance. The result was the Acorn SuperGlide Stair chair, which continues to be one of their most well known products. Until Acorn began manufacturing stair chairs, they had traditionally been powered by AC current. The developers at Acorn realized that there were many positive aspects associated with DC, battery, power. DC powers many advantages include higher safety, smooth operation, and the ability to still operate during power disruptions. Acorn pioneered this technology, and currently almost all stair lift manufacturers now offer a DC powered stair lift. Acorn Stair Lift's main headquarters and manufacturing hub is located in Yorkshire, New England. They have locations all over the world, including distribution centers in Orlando, Florida and Ontario, Canada.

With over 30,000 stair chairs manufactured each year, they are the biggest manufacturer in the United Kingdom. They have dealers all over the world and supply stair lifts to customers in over 70 different countries across the globe. Their dealers are located in places like Argentina, Belgium, Japan, France, Ireland, Austria, Africa, and Portugal, and it is safe to say that they are the most diverse stair lift manufacturer in the industry today. If you are in the market for a stair lifts, then you have likely seen the many different manufacturers. Acorn provides well made products that are built to last and can be depended upon to provide many years of safe operation. With over 15 years of experience in the stair lifts industry, they have continued to think of the customer's safety first and have largely contributed to developing new and advanced technology that is geared towards creating a safe, reliable, and relatively maintenance free product.

Family emergency preparedness 2006

Thought Hurricane season 2005 with Katrina and Rita was bad? Well get ready for 2006 as it will be equally as bad or worse. As an emergency preparedness consultant featured on CNN and Fox News, I can assure you that if you are not prepared you could meet the same fate as hundreds of people did during Katrina. NO scare tactics just the truth! First of all you need to have a water supply on hand for at least one week for each member of the family. We suggest one gallon per day per family member as the MINIMUM!

Sure the people in New Orleans were surrounded by water but it was totally unfit to drink. Next you need a supply of food that can be protected from rising water. You need to put it in LARGE plastic waterproof containers. You should have food for at least a week in the form of MREs and typical staples like peanut butter, jelly, honey, crackers, and can goods of baked beans, vegetables, soups, Spam, tuna, sardines, Vienna sausages, salmon, chicken, etc. Don't wait until the hurricane is upon you to get these items! Next you need for EVERY member of the family to have a Preparedness Travel Backpack with: clothes, a pair of sneakers, socks, underwear, a protective hat/cap, good quality poncho, an individual NASA blanket and or sleeping bag (these are folded so tight in their packages that you can easily get them in the backpack)and most importantly ID packets as described in my FR** Emergency Preparedness Guide at http:// usprepared. com. You will need a well equipped first aid kit that also can be kept in one of the backpacks along with an emergency radio that can be manually wound up. Put in a LARGE supply of matches that have been waterproofed. SEVERAL flashlights that feature the new LED lights that can be either shaken or wound up. Also make sure to have a supply of FRESH batteries of every size that you will be needing NOW not later! If you are traveling by vehicle, that vehicle should have FDA approved plastic containers for your drinking water and several other ones for your vehicle to keep it from overheating. You need GOOD quality plastic 5 gallon GAS containers filled up NOW. Keep a supply of oil and transmission fluid in the car along with several cans of those tire inflating aerosols. If you don't have a high quality tool kit for your vehicle get one NOW! Also have some form of emergency flashers available. Also make sure and have a family tent in the vehicle. How many people did you see during Hurricane Katrina that had to wait for FEMA to provide tents? Certainly you have fire extinguishers at home. Well do you also have one for each vehicle? If not, get then NOW! You are going to need to have your food supplies mentioned above in BIG plastic containers that can be moved to the vehicle without taking the time to stock it up. Do that NOW! There is a lot more that you will need to know and it's all available at http:// usprepared. com in the FREE Emergency Preparedness Guide. Also you will find info there on preparing for bird flu too.

How to avoid getting head lice

A head lice infestation is one of the most uncomfortable health conditions to cope with, in addition to this; permanently ridding your house of lice can be an extremely difficult task. For these reasons, it is always best to take precautions against you, or anyone in your household becoming infested. One of the most important steps you can take as a precaution against a head lice infestation is to learn as much as you can about these insects, and how they are spread. It’s important to understand that anyone can catch head lice, no matter what their race or social standing is. Head lice are found in all countries, cultures, and social classes. Head lice do not discriminate when it comes to whose head they choose to take up residence on. People with good hygiene can be infested just as fast as someone with bad hygiene. Once this concept is understood, you can then tackle the preventative measures that will need to be taken to ensure that you avoid a head lice infestation. If you have school aged children, it is essential that you examine their head on a regular basis for signs of head lice. It is this age group that is most often infested, especially girls, as they like to share hair accessories and hats. If you are checking your child’s head on a regular basis, you will likely catch it before it becomes very bad. The sooner you catch a head lice infestation, the easier it will be to get rid of. Talk to your children about not sharing personal items with other children at school, such as hats, scarves, combs, etc. This is very important, as this is usually how head lice spreads. If you become aware that someone you, or your children has frequent contact with has become infested with head lice, immediately check everyone’s hair in the house. Head lice spreads very quickly, and you may become infested before you even know someone near you has it. Even if you find nothing during the examination, continue checking on a daily basis for quite some time, as it may take a little while before you can detect them. In addition, even if the infected person close to you treats the head lice infestation, they could very easily become re-infested. The most important thing to remember about avoiding a head lice infestation is to be diligent, especially when there are children in the house.

Use dna testing to find your relatives

If you want to trace your ancestors, the job is much easier with modern DNA analysis techniques. The process is very simple. You register and pay a fee. The company sends you a mouth swab kit. You use it and send it back to the lab for analysis. Cells from your mouth swab will contain your DNA. The company have access to DNA databases that they compare your DNA to. You will be sent a report listing the individuals in the database that your DNA shows a match with. All cells contain DNA, including the sex cells, sperm and egg cells. When a sperm and egg cell combine the new cell formed contains DNA from both parents. DNA analysis in a specialist laboratory can give evidence about the likelihood of 2 individuals being related. There is only a tiny chance of 2 individuals having identical DNA, unless they are identical twins. Identical twins will have the same DNA because the fertilized egg that split to give the 2 fetuses came from the same sperm and the same egg. It only split after the DNA from the two sex cells had already combined. DNA analysis can be used to pinpoint an individual at the scene of a crime. This is particularly simple in rape cases because semen contains sperm cells that contain the male DNA. Find the DNA match and you have found the rapist. All cells contain DNA though, including skin and hair cells. We drop skin and hair cells everywhere we go, so all the crime scene technician does is to collect these from a murder, arson or burglary crime scene and find the DNA profile of the criminal. DNA analysis can be used to prove or disprove paternity. This is commonly used in cases where the mother is trying to claim maintenance payments from an absent father. Where people were adopted as infants and are looking for their natural parents DNA analysis can also be used. Your birth parents do not need to have registered to get a result. If any person related to you is in the database, a positive result will show. You may find grandparents, siblings or more distant relatives, all of which will lead to more information on your heritage.

Infant adoption costs and what to be prepared for

Adopting an infant can require alot of money. However, you should not let money interfere with the process of adoption. There are a number of factors that can contribute to either a higher cost for adoption as well as a lower cost. The major factor of the cost is whether or not a privately owned company or public adoption agency is used for the infant adoption. There are two major categories that infant adoption can be separated into. Universal expenses is one such category. Items covered in this category can range from court costs to home study expenses. The other category of cost is adoption-specific expenses.

Depending on what type of adoption process you use, this will determine the varying expenses. By combining these two categories you would have the total cost of adoption calculated. Potential parents seeking adoption must have a home study performed. This is considered part of the home study expenses. This process helps prepare the adult for the adoption as well as the process.

In order to help get a great parent/child match, important information is taken from this study. If you are doing foster care adoption, no costs are involved due to the work being performed by a local public agency. Just about any other type of adoption, either a private agency or certified social worker is used. The range of cost varies between $1,000 and $3,000 for a home study. Be prepared to also pay for legal fees for adoption. There are preparation costs that can range anywhere between $500 and $2,000. An additional $2,500 to $12,000 can be expected to be paid if you need legal representation throughout the process. Depending on the type of agency used during the infant adoption, adoption-specific costs can vary.

Licensed private agencies typically range from $5,000 to $40,000, while foster care adoptions range from $0 to $2,500. An even greater cost is incurred with international adoptions. These can range from $7,000 to $30,000. All costs and fees should be observed by potential adoptive parents. Before you get too caught up into adopting a child, be sure to assess all the associated fees involved with an infant adoption. Make sure you are financially sound in order to cover these costs. If you are finding it difficult to come up with the funds to adopt, there are resources available to financially help you out with adoption costs.

Vertical platform lifts in homes

Vertical platform lifts are primarily used by individuals who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters. They are used to transport a mobility device and its rider up and down the stairs. They are often found in residential settings, but many businesses also use them. This includes places like churches and schools. A vertical platform lift is designed to support the weight of a mobility device, such as a mobility scooter, and its rider. Most do not support less than 500 pounds and many can support as much as 750 pounds. In many cases a 2 people will ride the vertical platform lift at one time. This is common among husbands and wives, as well as caregivers. Some models are able to travel distances up to 12 feet.

Since most vertical platform lifts are intended for outside use they are water resistant and weather proof. Many also feature a battery backup to make sure that even if the power goes out that the device can still be used. If you intend to install the vertical platform lift in a public area or if you are worried about young children playing on it, it is a good idea to invest in a keyed lock. Most distributors can outfit the porch lifts with locks if they do not already come with one. They are controlled by use of either a set of call buttons or a remote control. Vertical platform lifts are used by many millions of people. They are like having your own personal elevator and can also be used to transport goods up and down the stairs.

Checklist for moving

: Using a checklist for moving can keep you from forgetting things. Important things, like turning on the electricity in your new home, or filling the heating oil tank. Of course you have to make your own moving checklist, but you can start with the suggestions here. Checklist For Moving - A Month Before The Move - Submit your change of address forms to post office. - Obtain documents for school transfers, if you have children. - Find a moving company, and make reservations. - Give your new address to friends and family. - Hold a garage sale or otherwise lighten the load. Checklist For Moving - One Or Two Weeks Before - Move your banking accounts to the new location.

- Return rented movies, books to library, etc. - get your prescriptions transferred to the new location. - Clean your house. - Call for utility shut-offs and new connections. - Dispose of things that won't be moved. - Begin packing and labling boxes.

- Organize and pack an "essentials" box for arrival (toiletries, paper plates, etc.). - Final moving plans (make hotel reservations, get maps, etc.). Checklist For Moving Day - Remember to eat. - Start early. - Check every room and storage area. - Turn off all lights, lock the doors. - Give the keys to the new owner or real estate agent. There will be many more items to add to your personal list.

Begin writing down anything you think of as soon as you know when you'll be moving. Can you have your new phone ready to use when you arrive at your new home? Will you need to return across the country because you forgot about a safe-deposit box? To avoid problems like these is to start early on your checklist for moving.

How to score a good deal on a moroccan candle lantern

In order to find that moroccan candle lantern you've been looking for, you only need to read this resource to find that good deal. Many websites sell them for some high prices while others just content themselves with a fraction of the price. Why you wonder? because some people believe that high prices mean high quality products. While that saying is actually true, it can be wrong sometimes. Some online stores sell Moroccan lanterns for as high as $500 or $700, but some others start their eBay auctions at a very low price. Will you believe me if I tell you that I have paid $20 for a luxurious moroccan candle lantern on eBay? I'm sure you will because eBay is full of surprises. Now I am not saying that eBay is a the ultimate solution for you, you should also look at some online merchants who don't use eBay.

I will list some examples: Ameerahimports. com always has sales going on throughout the year, they sell some lanterns for as low as $10. Berbertrading. com offers better quality for a slightly higher price. Justmorocco. com comes with a large collection of lanterns, but their prices are higher than the rest because they offer larger lanterns that require more work. TheMoroccanbazaar. com has a good collection of Moroccan lanterns and I believe their prices are fair when you see how big their lanterns are. All these stores have a good reputation, they have bigger collections and you can find some items you won't find anywhere else. But, there are other places where you can find Moroccan lanterns for a small price. What I'm talking about is comparison shopping websites such as Shopzilla and Nextag. Using them will give you a good idea about the prices in the market. There's one thing you should have in mind while shopping for Moroccan lanterns, you have to decide what you need before you pay for anything, small or big lanterns? glass or metal lanterns? you need to know before you spend anything. One last place to look is eBay, you can get some good deals for as low as $1, depending on your luck. Well, now that you know where to look, it's up to you to find that good deal. Happy shopping!

When an emergency strikes disaster survival gear saves lives

When it comes to emergency preparedness, it's easy to get lulled into a sense of complacency. It's difficult to face the reality that disaster could strike close to home, even though we've witnessed the devastation that comes from disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the Asian tsunami, the tornado that flattened a Kansas town, and terrorist attacks like those on 9/11. The unfortunate truth is that earthquake, fire, flood, and storms can cause injuries, death, and destruction. More importantly - and more hopefully - much of the unbearable heartache and loss associated with disasters can be avoided with the proper disaster survival gear. Emergency preparedness doesn't mean seeing the world through the eyes of doom and gloom. It doesn't mean that there is a disaster looming around every corner. Having the proper disaster survival gear simply means acknowledging that the world is an unpredictable place, and that it's best to be prepared. After all, when you buy a box of Band-Aids and tuck it away in a cupboard, you don't wake up each morning certain that a loved one will suffer a cut or scrape; it just means that you have Band-Aids on hand if a minor injury occurs. The same holds true for disaster survival gear. Once you have it, you don't have to worry about it. Hopefully, you'll never need to use it, but if the need arises, you'll be prepared.

Survival Kits for Every Location When you consider purchasing disaster survival gear, it's important to remember that you don't know where you and your loved ones will be when an emergency strikes. Perhaps you'll be at home, but maybe you'll be at work or in the car, and your children may be at school. It's important to make sure that each location has the necessary disaster survival gear to improve the odds of making it through whatever natural or manmade emergency occurs. Home Disaster Survival Gear Your home emergency preparedness kit should contain enough food, water, shelter, sanitation, first aid, lighting and communication supplies necessary for the number of people in your family. Because a catastrophic event often means no running water or electricity, and because it can impact the livability of your home, it's important to have the supplies necessary to be self-sufficient. Critical supplies to include are food bars and water boxes for three days, thermal blankets designed to retain body heat, ponchos with hoods, tissue packs, work gloves, a tube tent, water purification tablets, dust masks, vinyl gloves, a solar radio and flashlight with generator, first aid kit, light sticks, can opener, nylon cord, contact cards, gas shut-off wrench, Swiss Army knife, waterproof matches, emergency candles, toilet bags and chemicals, duct tape, and whistle. When preparing your disaster survival gear, it's important not to forget your pets. Include a collar and leash, toys, food and water bowls, food and water, a thermal blanket, a pet first aid kit, and a decal that can alert rescue workers to the presence of a pet. DIY or Ready-Made? The reason many people hesitate to prepare for emergencies is that it's a hassle to put together your own disaster survival gear. The idea of having to go to different stores and pick up supplies makes it easy to procrastinate. Plus, there's the question of the shelf life of different items, particularly food and water. Many people opt to buy ready-made emergency preparedness kits. Not only is it less hassle, but the best ready-made kits have a five-year shelf life and come in a sealed bucket. Just like buying that box of Band-Aids, a ready-made kit of disaster survival gear is easy to buy and tuck away. Hopefully, you'll never have to use it, but you'll rest easier knowing that, if emergency does strike, it could save your life and the lives of those you love.

Essential supplies to begin scrapbooking

Everyone is doing it – scrapbooking that is – and you think you’d like to give it a try, too. However, you’re really not sure what the difference is between a scrapbook and a traditional photo album. You’re also not sure what supplies you’ll need. A quick lesson on the essentials of scrapbooking will bring you right up to speed. Modern scrapbooks are different from traditional photo albums in a few respects. They hold both photographs and memorabilia. For that reason they are sometimes referred to as memory books.

There is also an emphasis on writing, or journaling, in scrapbooking. Each scrapbook should tell a story. Scrapbooks are also more aesthetically pleasing than traditional photo albums. Attention is paid to the layout of the pages. Often, pages are decorated with colorful paper and stickers, although this is not necessary. The biggest distinction between a modern scrapbook and a traditional photo album is the emphasis on the preservation of the photos and memories. The albums, papers, pens, and adhesives should all be photo safe. Photo safe is a term that means that the materials used in creating a scrapbook are designed to do the least amount of long term damage on your photos and memorabilia. Damage includes fading, yellowing, and a degradation of the paper the photos or memorabilia are printed on. Because of this emphasis on preservation, specific, specialized supplies are required when scrapbooking. These supplies can be purchased at many art supply stores, specialty scrapbooking stores or from many online retailers. The supplies you will need to create your first scrapbook are: Photos and memorabilia – Before beginning any album you should have its contents organized. You may want to do a themed album (baby, wedding, vacation, etc.) or a chronological family album. Either way, having the album’s contents collected before you begin will help you complete your album more efficiently. A photo safe album – The album you purchase should be free from acid and lignin (a substance in wood that will turn paper unstable and cause it to yellow). It should also be the correct size for the project you are tackling. This is where having your photos and memorabilia organized beforehand comes in handy. If you’re creating a brag book for grandma of her new grandchild, a small album that has only one or two photos per page may be appropriate. If you’re chronicling your child’s athletic career and have large newspaper clippings, a larger album would be the appropriate choice. A photo trimmer – Photo trimmers come in handy to crop out any unwanted parts of a photograph or to trim decorative paper. They do the job quickly and neatly. A good pair of scissors – There are some jobs the photo trimmer just can’t do. A good, sharp pair of scissors will come in handy. Photo safe pens – Special pens are sold that are created to be photo safe. Look for pens that say “acid free”, “photo safe” or “archival quality” on them. A photo safe adhesive – Special tape and other adhesives that are photo safe should be purchased. Page protectors – Page protectors are photo safe plastic covers that slip over completed pages. Some albums come with them. If yours does not, buy them. Decorative papers and stickers – These are not essential to creating an album, but many people involved in scrapbooking like to embellish their pages with them. Once you’ve gathered all your supplies, you are ready to get to work. If you need a little inspiration, you can find ideas for your scrapbook on internet sites, in scrapbooking magazines, and from other scrap-bookers.

Make a statement other than i want to keep dry with a designer umbrella

Umbrellas come in a wide variety of shapes, styles and colors to meet many needs. From the basic bolt on beach chair umbrellas to fashionable designer personal umbrellas and the large ones for your backyard. They all make a statement about your personal style. Everyone knows that an umbrella is extremely useful in a rainstorm or when the hot sun is beating down. Heck, most of us have several just because carrying one around in case of a downpour is inconvenient. If you live in an area with a high number of precipitation days during the year, you probably have a small collapsible umbrella, one in your car, one at work and at least several at home. From a practical standpoint, an umbrella in one of those standard utilitarian tools that are practical and necessary. Those of us in high heat places where the sun feels hot and burning due to the intensity also benefit from an umbrella or parasol to deliver some much needed shade. The umbrella has been a popular accessories for the stylish person for thousands of years due to it's utilitarian usefulness.

Still, with style at an all time premium in our society, it just makes sense though to consider a custom umbrella. One that would not only compliment your style but also deliver a statement about you as a person. All with the addition of a specialty or custom designer umbrella. Umbrellas typically are designed for a single person and unfortunately, if there's any wind, doesn't keep you completely dry either. They're just not large enough to accommodate someone moving and carrying several things with them. The answer here is the oversized umbrella.

These are much larger and can comfortably accommodate 2 people comfortably. And unlike the older style umbrellas with the metal ribs, many of the larger units feature lightweight plastic or even bamboo like wood materials. So although much larger, these units are not heavier and are actually more fun to use because you're not worrying about getting wet all the time. Umbrellas can be customized with logos and offered as premium thank you type gifts for employees and customers. They also are available in a wide variety or designer colors and designs. These designs include jungle scenes, beautiful tropical flowers, bold geometric lines, multi-colored rainbows natural scenery, jungle animals and much more. These stylish umbrellas are available for not only personal use but also come in larger sizes for cabanas and backyard decoration. Don't be satisfied with just the plain and ordinary when you can have something that is not only just useful but also beautiful.

You should send your invitations out approximately three to four weeks before your party to give everyone time to make plans to attend. If you’re running short of time sending electronic invitations is a great idea too. You can add animation and sound to e-invitations and even check guest’s responses online. Be sure to contact anyone who doesn’t respond via telephone since not everyone checks their email often. Spooky Decorations Everyone will expect to see your house decorated to the nines on Halloween so be sure not to disappoint. Your decorations should match your theme, so give them plenty of thought. For instance, a haunted house theme should be complete with low lighting, smoke, a spooky soundtrack, and even live ghouls to jump out and scare the guests as they arrive. A horror movie bash might include retro horror B-movie posters stuck on the walls which you can find on the Internet and print off at home. Decorations can be found just about anywhere in the months leading up to Halloween. Even grocery stores carry a wide selection. Start shopping early so you can get the best selection possible and take advantage of any sales. If you can’t find just what you’re looking for you can always rent decorations from a local party supply shop or even purchase decorations from the Internet. The Internet has an almost endless selection and you can find just about any party supplies or decorations you’ll need. Music is an important aspect of any party as well. While some spooky tunes are fun at first, you’ll want to switch over to some more upbeat music once the party gets going. People love to dance so have plenty of high energy songs ready to go. If you are inviting a variety of different people have several different types of music so no ones gets bored. Tasty Halloween Treats Food is an important part of any party. While you don’t need to provide a full meal, some creative and tasty snacks and treats will help keep your guests fueled for the night’s festivities. Turning simple party food into ghoulish culinary delights will surprise and please your guests. Try making some bewitching cupcakes, and put out snacks such as gummy worms and other Halloween candy treats. Costumes are a given, since this is Halloween after all. If you are having a Halloween theme of some sort, let your guests know on your invitations that they should dress to fit the theme. For instance, if you’re throwing a horror movie bash, you can simply say, “come as your favorite horror movie star”. Don’t expect all your guests to comply with your request. Some people have been thinking up their Halloween costume since last year! Don’t forget about the party favors! Depending on how many people you’re inviting and how much you’re willing to spend, the possibilities are endless when it comes to party favors. A simple idea is candy bags full of traditional treats such as candy corn. Something more substantial might be a pumpkin carving kit that comes with cutouts and tools. Your guests will love having a little something to take home with them. Endless Costume Possibilities If you really aren’t into the scary aspect of Halloween, you can always break with tradition and hold a different type of Halloween party. Have a famous couples party or a crazy hat party instead. Guests can still dress up but might be more creative then a white sheet with holes cut out of it. Dressing up for Halloween is something that both adults and kids can enjoy so great creative and have fun with it! Having games at your party isn’t a necessity, but can be a great deal of fun for your guests. Games act as an excellent icebreaker if everyone doesn’t know each other. Any games where you can break people off into teams will help to get everyone talking. Pumpkin carving contests are a good idea, as is bobbing for apples. Be sure to give a prize to the best costume as well. Your Halloween party is sure to be a success if you take the time to plan. Leave yourself plenty of time and don’t forget it’s all the little details that help to make a fabulous party. Enlist the help of family and friends if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and remember, planning is half the fun!

All about moving companies

If you’re planning your next big residential move or office move, you’re becoming aware of the issues involved in transporting a house or office full of belongings, furniture, and people. In the back of your mind, you’re thinking that you can do this by yourself and yet some of your valuable property might probably be damaged during the move. Part of the cost of moving? On the other hand you could hire a moving company and know that they do this sort of thing everyday and have all the people and transport equipment to get things done efficiently. When faced with the cost of hiring a moving company for a cross-town move, most people will round up their relatives, friends and even neighbours to get their property loaded up to the moving van or into a moving pod. In some cases, that’s fine, yet given how mobile many people, families and businesses are today, you can only rely on your friends and relatives so often. You’ll wear out your welcome if they have to take several days off of their precious free time to help others move. If they’re getting older as most people are today, they’re not going to appreciate the possibility of getting injured while carrying your heavy property items such as sofas, fridges, beds, tables, TVs, and desks. The work involved in moving isn’t for everyone, yet professional moving companies are skilled in making moves go smoothly, from planning, to safe packaging to trouble free transport. Moving to Florida My sister and her family are in the process of moving to Florida where she and her sons will join her husband who is now working there. They will be using a big moving company to manage the logistics of the move. All she and her sons have to do is drive down to Florida. If we had to help them with the move and pack up a house full of furniture, kitchenware, bikes, golf clubs, hockey equipment, baseball equipment, fishing gear, desks, chairs, TVs and computers, it would take two days. Even then, I don’t think we could pack it properly in the moving van or truck. It would undoubtedly shift during the trip despite our expert rope tying tricks and special packing system. The truth is, we don’t know what we’re doing, and their furniture would be all banged up with loosened or broken legs when they opened the moving van doors down in Sarasota. That’s when the ugly surprises happen. When you find your TV doesn’t work and your family heirlooms are going to need some serious “crazy glue” repairs, you get angry with yourself for not being cautious. For the sake of a few dollars, your belongings get damaged and their appearance is diminished. If you have a plasma TV, you can kiss it goodbye if you try to pack it yourself. Yes, everyone is upwardly mobile these days and the task of an international, interstate, or cross-town move is on many to-do lists. One way to cross off the details of that big project is to hire a professional moving company. Professional Moving Services Big national movers offer a wide range of move planning and related moving services. They can handle all relocation services from reserving the moving van to packing your property to helping you with childcare and real estate related services in the city you’re moving to. These relocation services shouldn’t be underplayed. If you’re on your way to a strange city or a foreign country, you’ll need a little help in making the adjustment. You may need to store your belongings while you’re gone and these companies usually have big temperature and environmentally controlled storage warehouses and units that can keep your property clean and dry over long periods of time. Contrasting that with having your belongings collecting mould in someone’s basement or garage. Moving firms have relocation specialists that handle these projects frequently. They know what you’re going through emotionally and in terms of preparation. They can help in many ways. As an example, they provide home marketing assistance including home disposition and in the home-sale process, and even property management. For employee transfers to new cities, they can coordinate the details of managing the employee’s property until the employee returns home. They can find short-term housing for the transferee, and find a new home for them. These real estate related services include area orientations, broker selection, negotiations, pre-purchase appraisals and closing. You’re no doubt a smart, capable person and can master all of these transaction issues at your new location, however, if you’re moving to a new job in a strange city, how will you find the time? You can only handle so much stress and you’ll need support in your new hometown. Let go of your image of moving companies as a bunch of sweaty, strong guys that push furniture into the back of a moving van. These companies plan and carry out moving tasks in a professional manner and offer moving and relocation services that will help you and your family better adjust to your new location. It’s important to get off on the right foot in your new home location. You’ll have schools to find for your children and you’ll be spending time just discovering how to get to your new work place and around town. On office moves, you will have strict times and locations by which you can manage your move. Certainly, your staff can assist in the transfer and organization however; it is best to have a professional handle the logistics and moving from office building to office building. You can avoid damage and hard feelings towards employees who were trying to be careful before they dropped something. International Moving For your next International move, interstate, local and office move, call a professional moving firm such as Humboldt Storage & Moving Company.

Throughout the ages a celebration of moms

The average consumer in America is planning to spend nearly $100 for Mother's Day, most likely to shower his or her mom with gifts, flowers and candy. Mothers have been honored in this way throughout history. During the 1600s, for instance, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday." Traditionally, it was a day when children who worked as servants were given a day off to visit home. They would bring special cakes to their mothers, who then would give blessings to their children. The custom was called "going a-mothering.

" Today, many countries around the world -- including Mexico, China, Turkey, Finland and Russia, to name a few -- have special celebrations to honor mothers. Here are some facts you may not know about Mother's Day here in America. In the early 1850s, Anna Reese Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker who never married, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community. She believed this cause would be best advocated by mothers and called the event "Mothers' Work Day." In 1905, after Jarvis' death, her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize her mother's work. She lobbied prominent businessmen and politicians, including Presidents William Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. She hoped Mother's Day would increase respect for parents and strengthen family bonds. The first Mother's Day observances were in church services honoring the elder Jarvis in Grafton, W. Va., and Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. By 1911, every state held its own Mother's Day observance. Then, on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday. As Mother's Day became more commercialized, however, Jarvis became upset, and even was arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention for a war mother's group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the Mother's Day tradition. Most Americans are glad she did, however, and they have been thinking of creative and fun ways to honor their mothers ever since. Whitman's Chocolates, founded in Philadelphia in 1842, became one of the first confectioners to provide Mother's Day assortments. Its stores were crowded each year with people looking for just the right Mother's Day assortment. Many chose its famous Whitman's Sampler of fine chocolates. Today, the Whitman's Sampler remains one of the most popular gifts given on Mother's Day, with one sold every 1.5 seconds in the United States. - NU

Overview of evaporative air coolers

If you ask an older relative if they have heard of an evaporative cooler, they may say no. But chances are they would recognize the idea behind the technology. Before air conditioning or other cooler types existed, people would sleep outside on a screened in porch to try to stay cool at night. They would often hang damp sheets over the screens in an attempt to cool the air. As the hot air passed through the sheet, it was cooled. And then the cool air would slowly circulate, relieving some of the heat for the sleepers. The same idea exists today in the form of evaporative coolers. These machines are wonderful cooling mechanisms for people who live in hot, dry climates. They are also known by the name swamp coolers, but that can be misleading because they actually won’t work at all in swampy, humid conditions. The name probably came from the way that evaporative coolers actually add humidity to the air. But in fact, evaporative coolers need dry, hot air to work because in order for the air to be cooled, it has to be able to pick up (evaporate) some of the water. If the air is already saturated, it won’t pick up any more water and it won’t be cooled. Here’s how evaporative coolers work; the machine is composed of a fan that pulls the hot dry air inside the cooler, where it is passed through damp pads.

The pads are kept damp by a pump that circulates water through the machine. As the dry air picks up some of the water, its temperature drops, sometimes by as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the climate. The cooler air is then blown into the room. An added bonus of an evaporative cooler is that the pads that cool the air also filter it. As the air passes through the pads, dirt, dust, allergens and other pollutants are captured in the fibers of the pads. So you’ll be breathing cleaner, cooler air. If you’re wondering why you should choose an evaporative cooler over a traditional air conditioner, there’s one more reason we haven’t covered yet. The cost to run an evaporative cooler can be as little as 1/10 the amount it costs to run an air conditioner. In fact, some community power companies in hot, dry climates will actually offer residents a rebate if they install an evaporative cooler because they recognize the effective, efficient cooling capabilities of the technology. Contact your local power company to see if they offer the rebates and ask if they have any information on the effectiveness of an evaporative cooler in your area.

Retirement living

The rising number of baby boomers will likely have a great impact on retirment living. As many of them near retirement, they will likely alter the definition of what it means to be retired. Many seniors today are seeking a more active lifestyle. Many of these people don't really want to retire, and some will work part-time for the rest of their lives. Other seniors view retirement as being a time where they can enjoy hobbies and other things they are interested in. To serve this large market, a number of destination retirement communities have been established. They are targeted towards seniors who want low living expenses, or who prefer to live in warm climates. For other seniors, living close to family members is very important. While they may want to move into a place that is smaller, they will not want to leave the comfort of the communities they live in. The goal of destination retirements is to create an environment where seniors and baby boomers can relax with a large number of amenities. These places will often be located near golf courses, spas, hiking trails, and fitness centers. These locations are designed so that those who live there can enjoy themselves. The houses that are built in these communities will use materials that are easy to maintain, and they will be open and easy to access. Because the people living in the places will be older, it uses a design which will cater to them. Their lives will be easy because their bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms will be designed in a way that is easy for them to use. Destination retirement communities will change the definition of retirement. Because of the many luxuries they offer, they are an excellent choice for baby boomers who want to leave their homes. Recent polls that have been taken indicate that over 60% of baby boomers said they were interested in moving into a retirement community, while over 50% said that they would like to move to a warmer climate. A large percentage also indicate that they plan to purchase a retirement home. Despite this, most of the people who took these polls also indicated that they won't to stay close to their family members. The biggest goal of many baby boomers is to pursue interests that they never had time to pursue while they were younger. Over 60% of baby boomers said they would like to travel, while others want to spend time exercising. But many baby boomers also admit that they would like to learn new skills or perform volunteer work. As the list of these people continues to grow, they will be looking for places which can suit their needs and interests. Destination retirement communities can allow seniors to enjoy life and pursue the many hobbies and tasks that they are interested in. Many of these people have worked long and hard for their entire lives, and will want to enjoy the things that they have obtained. Most retiring baby boomers will have large amounts of wealth, and will be looking for a large number of ways to enjoy it.

Creating a memory book through scrapbooking

The art of Scrapbooking has become very popular. Scrapbooking allows you to create memory books that are so much more than the old standard, boring photo albums of yesterday. Using the immense supplies available for you to choose from in your Scrapbooking, you can create memory books that reflect not only your personality: but that also help you to capture the true “essence” of those special memories you want remembered forever. You can begin making your memory scrapbook, sure to become a treasure to be shared from generation to generation with basic materials like patterned paper, rubber stamps, patterns, stencils, stickers, serrated - scissors, and the photos you already have. This is just a small example of the many supplies that are available for you to choose from in creating your memory book. You can find Scrapbooking supplies online and in many malls and outlet stores today. Software programs are also available to help you design the perfect memory book for your precious memories. Begin by looking at a photo; recall the memories and feelings that arise by looking at this picture that has been captured on film. What does this picture represent to you? Maybe it is the love of family and friends, or the adventure you found on your last vacation. Whatever it is, consider how you might best represent these feelings, and memories so that someone else looking at this same photograph, even a few generations removed, will be able to understand the emotions and circumstances surrounding the images of the people, places, or things seen in this particular piece of film.

Being able to know why a certain picture was taken, and what it meant to the one who took the shot, results in a ‘bonding’ between the original picture taker, the event captured, and the one who is now looking at these images. Once you have started to think about what this picture means to you and how you would like to best represent that meaning, you can start to create a memory scrapbook that will keep these precious memories alive forever. The best memory books have pages that employ the use of many different types of materials. Don’t be afraid to mix stickers with cut-outs (made by designed scissors), patterned papers, stencils, rubber stamp images, markers, crayons, and labels.

Let your creative-side come out in the designing of your memory books. With a little creativity it is easy to create memory scrapbooks that are a joy to share with family and friends. Family history can be captured in these books: to be recalled in your lifetime and as testimonials of relatives in the past, to be known and remembered by the generations to follow. You not only have a plethora of choices in materials already available to choose from in creating your memory book, new ideas, and materials are created every day for those who want to use scrapbooking as a way to create memory books that will last forever. What should you use to hold your newly created memory pages? You can choose to use a standard photo album, one that you can decorate using the same materials used in making your memory pages. Or maybe you will want to complete your memory book by laminating a couple of special memory pages for the front and back covers, and then “binding” them together with all of your memory pages into a book.

You can learn more about bookbinding through books and software programs. Scrapbook stores and the internet are also good sources of information about scrapbooking and bookbinding.

: Many articles supply answers, but here I do not. Here, I ask the questions. If you want to rack your brains for finding the answers to these life conundrums. But, I warn you. Beware. These are not easy, and though somewhat hilarious and funny, they are real and true to life. Should I begin?

Ok, here I go: 1) How come Tarzan has no bears even though he grows up with wolves in the jungle? 2) Why does glue not stick to the insides of the tube or can that it comes in? 3) Why do they use sterile injections when executing someone who is condemned to death? 4) Why do we press down harder and harder or the remote controls even though we know that the batteries are low? 5) Why is it that when someone hits us in the ankles with his supermarket trolley and then appologizes, do we say that everything is ok? I mean, things are not really fine. Why is it that we do not say that it hurts? 6) Why is it that whatever the color of the bath soap, the bubbles are always white? 7) Why is it that you will never find a day when mattresses are not on sale? 8) Why is it that online casinos always offer big prize money for their tournaments but never reveal the real name of the winner after the competition is over? 9) If human beings evolved from monkeys, why is it that there still are monkeys? 10) Why did the Japanese Kamikaze pilots wear helmets during the second World War? 11) Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest but, then, duck when the empty gun is thrown at him. 12) Why do banks charge a commission when you go into debt even though they know that there is no money in that account?

13) Why do people go back again and again to the refrigerator hoping that something new to eat will appear there? 14) Why do people move their vacuum cleaner over a thin thread lying on the floor, bend down, pick it up, examine it, and then, place it on the floor again and move the vacuum over it again? 15) Why do people believe it when they are told that there are more than four billion stars, but when they see a sign that says wet paint, they have to touch and check? 16) Why does a plastic bag not open at the end where you first try to open it? 17) Why do you never hear jokes about father in laws?

18) Why are there dead insects inside enclosed electric lamps? 19) Why is it that in winter we try and keep the house as warm as it was during the summer when back in the summer we hated the heat? 20) Why is it that every time you try and catch something that is about to fall off the table, you always hit something else and drop that instead? Conclusion: Life has many oddities and conundrums: some funny, some less. I have mentioned but a few. Think of more? Send them to me.
