So the argument has been made that these containers could be turned into shelter for use in emergencies. In light of the recent aftermath of hurricane Katrina, there could actually be immediate need for such shelters. Ideally, the converted containers could be delivered by truck to the actual home sight of the disaster victims.

They could live in the shelter on their own land, using the utilities that are already supplied to that lot until their home is rebuilt. The shelters would be preferable to tents because of their steel beam construction. They can endure strong winds, snow and even wildfires. However, the first step is to get the containers converted. At the moment, there are a few problems that those performing the conversion face.

First of all, the containers are only 8 feet wide which doesn't create much room. Cutting away sides and joining 2 containers together can solve this problem. Windows and other holes for utilities have to be cut with a blow torch, requiring specialized labor. So, at the moment, the cost of converting these shipping containers would be prohibitive. But there is a solution to this problem.

Proponents of the idea, including professors, students, nonprofit organizations and some members of the building industry suggest that the containers should be designed so that conversion is possible at some point in the future. They could have removable panels that would not endanger the integrity of the container when it's being used for shipping and could be easily removed when the container is needed in an emergency for shelter. When needed, these containers could then be transported and set up much faster and would be a much more comfortable solution for the victims. There are still many questions about this idea, mostly about how to get enough interest from the government agencies that are responsible for disaster relief as well as from the companies that manufacture and use the containers. For example, who will pay for the changes needed to the equipment and processes that the manufacturers might use? What type of notification and organization system will be put into place to direct the distribution and installation of the shelters? What happens to the containers once the victims have acquired permanent housing? And again, who will pay for the delivery and removal of the units?

All of these and other questions would need to be answered before the idea could be put into widespread use. Although the idea is still in the formative stages, it definitely shows promise.

Throughout the ages a celebration of moms

The average consumer in America is planning to spend nearly $100 for Mother's Day, most likely to shower his or her mom with gifts, flowers and candy. Here are some facts you may not know about Mother's Day here in America. In the early 1850s, Anna Reese Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker who never married, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community. She believed this cause would be best advocated by mothers and called the event "Mothers' Work Day." In 1905, after Jarvis' death, her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize her mother's work. She lobbied prominent businessmen and politicians, including Presidents William Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. She hoped Mother's Day would increase respect for parents and strengthen family bonds. The first Mother's Day observances were in church services honoring the elder Jarvis in Grafton, W. Va., and Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. By 1911, every state held its own Mother's Day observance. Then, on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday. As Mother's Day became more commercialized, however, Jarvis became upset, and even was arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention for a war mother's group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the Mother's Day tradition. Most Americans are glad she did, however, and they have been thinking of creative and fun ways to honor their mothers ever since. And then the cool air would slowly circulate, relieving some of the heat for the sleepers. The same idea exists today in the form of evaporative coolers. These machines are wonderful cooling mechanisms for people who live in hot, dry climates. They are also known by the name swamp coolers, but that can be misleading because they actually won’t work at all in swampy, humid conditions. The name probably came from the way that evaporative coolers actually add humidity to the air. But in fact, evaporative coolers need dry, hot air to work because in order for the air to be cooled, it has to be able to pick up (evaporate) some of the water. If the air is already saturated, it won’t pick up any more water and it won’t be cooled. Here’s how evaporative coolers work; the machine is composed of a fan that pulls the hot dry air inside the cooler, where it is passed through damp pads.

The pads are kept damp by a pump that circulates water through the machine. As the dry air picks up some of the water, its temperature drops, sometimes by as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the climate. The cooler air is then blown into the room. An added bonus of an evaporative cooler is that the pads that cool the air also filter it. As the air passes through the pads, dirt, dust, allergens and other pollutants are captured in the fibers of the pads. So you’ll be breathing cleaner, cooler air. If you’re wondering why you should choose an evaporative cooler over a traditional air conditioner, there’s one more reason we haven’t covered yet. I mean, things are not really fine. Why is it that we do not say that it hurts? 6) Why is it that whatever the color of the bath soap, the bubbles are always white? 7) Why is it that you will never find a day when mattresses are not on sale? 8) Why is it that online casinos always offer big prize money for their tournaments but never reveal the real name of the winner after the competition is over? 9) If human beings evolved from monkeys, why is it that there still are monkeys? 10) Why did the Japanese Kamikaze pilots wear helmets during the second World War? 11) Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest but, then, duck when the empty gun is thrown at him. 12) Why do banks charge a commission when you go into debt even though they know that there is no money in that account?

18) Why are there dead insects inside enclosed electric lamps? 19) Why is it that in winter we try and keep the house as warm as it was during the summer when back in the summer we hated the heat? 20) Why is it that every time you try and catch something that is about to fall off the table, you always hit something else and drop that instead?
