Stay relaxed One of things that you should remember is so easy and simple to do but ironically, most golfers forget it. It is to relax. Although of course, for many people, relaxing is easier said than done, especially on the first round, since it brings intense pressure. This additional pressure will increase the heart rate of your body and will diminish your chances of having a great tee shot. Focus on the breathing that you have before you go straight hitting the ball off. A few deep, long breaths would do the trick. The key point here is you should have the main focus on your shot. Your wrists should not be used When you are to hit your drive, it is of paramount importance to remember that your wrists and hands are not the ones giving you enough power you need in driving the ball. The power you need should come from your shoulders in your back swing, when you are winding the body up while you prepare for your down swing. Keep the wrists straight, and you will see how your drive has become more and more consistent and accurate. In order for you to realize, visualize Before you really hit the shot, stand some few feet, maybe about two to three feet, behind the golf ball and try to visualize how the ball would take the flight path you want. Visualize how the ball is going to take off, “watch” it in air and its landing place. This will dramatically increase the chances you have in putting the golf ball in the exact place where you prefer it. Prepare what you need to prepare Before you go straight hitting your target, make sure first that you have spent some hours practicing to get a sense of how to sing. Do not strike your first drive without you warming up. If you have no time anymore for hitting some practice balls, spend at least five minutes to warm up. Before you step on to the tee, make sure you have spent some time on the practice range, to get into the feeling of the swing. Never, ever, hit your first drive without warming up. Do some exercises. About Golfing Zen: This is the third in a continuing series of short essays dealing with the application of Eastern spiritual philosophy to your golf game. The surface intent is that, as you apply the ideas, your golf and your enjoyment of the game will grow. However there is also an underlying motive: as you are able to see gains on the course, you’ll then be moved to alter your approach to life as well. Today’s Topic: You Already Know The fundamental objective of Eastern spiritualism is “enlightenment,” a complex idea, sometimes referred to as “waking up,” or “recovering from” the illusion. The illusion — again simplifying — is the illusion of separation, of being something or someone distinct from, separate from, everything else that we see and experience. Remember, Easterners see reality as being one universal entity out of which everything emerges. We are born into the illusion, and the search is to recover what we always knew: our true nature as an integral part of the universal consciousness. We already knew it… we’re trying to remember! So… how does that relate to golf? I would maintain that in a very similar way we already know what we need to know about golf. We simply forget… or we refuse to acknowledge the facts that are there, right in front of us. How can I say that? How can I suggest that a 20-handicapper knows? Isn’t golf this terribly difficult and subtle game? Isn’t it beyond most of us… at least beyond our ability to excel? That would certainly seem to be the case. Statistics — year after year — show that 90% of us have handicaps over 10, and a whopping 60% are over 18. The numbers don’t lie… clearly we don’t know. Or is really that we don’t remember? That we don’t act on what we know? I maintain the latter, and here’s why… Golf is not a hand-eye coordination game. Games where the ball and/or the player are moving — tennis, baseball, ping-pong, etc. — are hand-eye games. Golf, on the other hand, is a repetition game: the ability to repeat a specific motion, reliably and under pressure. Said even more strongly, golf is not a skill game. After all, it doesn’t take any great skill to hold the club correctly, to stand up to the ball with correct posture and alignment. All it takes is paying attention, paying attention to what we already know (as anyone who has played for any time at all has read or been told the basic fundamentals). Further, if we know how to hold the club and stand up to the ball, is it a difficult and illusive task to move smoothly to the top-of-the-backswing position? Given that one doesn’t have a physical handicap of some type, the answer is obviously a resounding “no.” It’s inescapable… we must obviously choose not to do so. Here’s the most obvious example. We all know that balance is part of the game; that being able to swing to a balanced finish position on our front (leading) leg is a fundamental. If we open our eyes at all, we see that every skilled player — 100% — does that every single swing. But go to any golf course or driving range and watch. True to the single-digit statistic quoted above, you’ll see that 90% of us don’t hold a balanced finish, and most of us are falling backwards. How do we expect to move the ball forward when we’re falling back? The conclusions are inescapable: the fundamentals of golf are right in front of us; the skills required are well within most or all of us. We know, but we don’t do. We forget to remember! Improve your body and watch your swing transform

Improve your body to maximize your swing. This may sound like an oxymoron, but I can speak for over 10,000 golfers worldwide who have done it. Through my online golf performance membership site, dvds and books, I’ve heard back from over 10,000 golfers the past 6 years who have seen dramatic improvements in the their swing and game. I have been preaching the theory of “improve your body, to improve your swing” for over 10 years now…and golfers from all over the world are finally believing it! Turn on the television while a professional tournament is on and you’ll hear the commentator mentioned golf fitness within 5 minutes. All the pros are doing it, so why wouldn’t you? Your body dictates your golfing ability! Period! Try to prove me wrong. This may sound like a bold statement, but a physically limited body will have no chance at optimal swing mechanics that are repeatable for 18 holes. How many times have you been paired up with a senior golfer who couldn’t make a full backswing; or stay in his golf swing? It’s a rampant problem! As golfers get older, their body’s decline rapidly. With this decline in both strength and flexibility comes a huge loss of distance with all the clubs; and a game that gets more inconsistent the more you play it. I can guarantee you 100% that if you improve your body, your swing will take care of itself. No more band aid swing fixes. No more gimmicky training aids. And not as many lessons are needed to see dramatic improvement in your swing. Your power and consistency will be the most notable improvement by improving your body and your swing. I’m not talking about hours a day in a sweaty gym! I’m talking about 30-40 minutes 2-3 times a week in your home, with minimal equipment. That’s it! Nothing more, nothing less! So don’t hesitate! Improve your body and your swing will be awesome!

Many of us recall old movie images of golfers in plaid pants, sweater vests, billed caps, and other stereotypical apparel of golfing lore. While clothing on golf courses has changed over the years, proper golf apparel is still expected. And the greater the prestige of the golf club, the greater the expectation you will abide by their dress code. Most clubs and courses, even the public ones, require that golfers follow a dress code. The most common rule is the collared shirt. Many courses require long pants, not jeans, and golf shoes. 5 Minutes Early Is Late When it comes to actually starting your game, the primary rule of etiquette is to show up on schedule for your tee time. That means you will have already done everything else in preparation for the start of the golf game. You'll need time to park your car, warm up, practice, buy balls, change, and pick up a cart. Being early is a matter of consideration for others. Leave Cell Phones In The Real World The exclusion of cell phones from golf apparel is another common courtesy on the links. Cell phones should be left in your car or locker. If you do need to bring 1 onto the course for emergencies, keep it turned off. When you're on the course, you'll need to understand how the other golfers in your group want to play. Some let the best score tee off on the next hole, while others let whoever is ready tee off first. You can offend players by not following their rules, even if their rules are, from your perspective, wrong. Time-Honored Conventions Make Golfing Unique An obsession with quiet is another characteristic for which golfers are known. Like most traditions, this one is based on necessity. When your object is to hit a small object with a long pole, you need all of your concentration. Even when golfing with friends, respect the fundamental rule of keeping quiet during shots, and standing out of the direct line of vision. Today's golfing rules of etiquette can seem archaic -- a throwback to days of old. They harken back to a slower paced time when consideration for others was perhaps easier. In the 21st century, golfing provides us a time away from the bustle of everyday living. Though golf is highly competitive, it is, nonetheless, a gentleman's -- and gentlewoman's -- game.

Golf the real thing

The grass is always greener on the other side. Not as green as I felt on the inside the day I decided to check out this golf lark. I could never get my head around why all the excitement and fuss at the sheer mention of the word golf. Off to the local driving range I did go, selected myself a golf club and purchased a token for fifty golf balls..Maybe if I had more knowledge on the game, I would have realized the importance of choosing the right size golf club. Inserting my token into the slot to collect the golf balls. What a nightmare. Well? no one told me to place a basket underneath the shoot.

Those balls came flooding out like Niagra falls. I hasten to add these balls did not roll they bounced. Some even higher than me, cursed they were without a doubt. Doomed from the start a golf stick to suit Shrek and only twenty balls of my fifty. The rest for all I know could be in Timbukto. I remember more misses than hits but I was slowly beginning to like and enjoy this so called golf lark. Why not try the real thing?

a voice called out from the cubicle next to me. Is this not the real thing I asked. No mate, came the reply. You need to be on a course. Determined to find out why this sport is so popular. I went in search of a course to play the real thing. Found myself a course with eighteen holes.

Now for the real thing. Taking the first shot and not taking my eyes of the ball, I watched it rotate in and around several humps down a funnel and then swirl in and out of a maze of curves. Bit like the krypton factor but I was desperate to find out about the real thing. It is 5pm and we are closing the attendant called out. But I am only on hole number three I explained. I am sorry sir, why not come back tommorrow? and that I did for the next fornight. Because that is how long it took me to finish this particular course.

Pedro (The Attendant) and I had struck up a friendly relationship in all the time I was going back and to. I am afraid Pedro this golf lark is not for me. Senor this is crazy golf, it is not the real thing. What is the difference I asked. I will need to show you senor? he answered. Pedro explained that he had a few friends that he would like me to meet up with. He also went onto say that they could help me in my quest to find out what the major attraction in golf is for many thousands of people. What lovely people Pedro's friends were. Very informative on the game. Oh and boy oh boy they sure showed me a few tricks of the trade. It is was all falling into place now. Knowing all the rules simplified and made this game more understanding. Yes? I was loving this new found sport that was to change my whole way of life for the rest of my life. It was time to leave so I thanked everyone for their expert guidance. The struggle has been long for women to gain the respect and opportunities previously available only to men. The players on the LPGA are well prepared to set the course for future growth. If you look at the women on top of the money list of the LPGA, you’ll find names like Annika Sorenstam, Grace Park, Loena Ochoa, Meg Mallon, Cristie Kerr, Karrie Webb, and others. The top money earners span in age from the early twenties to the mid-forties. The accomplishments of the older players proudly exhibit the high levels of strength and stamina both physically and mentally women possess.

These women are a good source of inspiration for other women struggling to free themselves from tradition and be what they desire. To achieve such feats physical and mental conditioning must be a regular part of life. Whether it is your goal to join the ranks of the LPGA or simply become the best golfer you can be regular conditioning is a must. Fitness for golf is becoming a regular part of the golf world.

Even recreational players are beginning to realize that with some level of muscular strength and flexibility, their golf swing suffers. More players are spending much of their training time in the gym rather than at the driving range. Their efforts pay off in the form of a more powerful and consistent swing. It’s great to practice, and to learn from instructors the techniques of golf, but if the body isn’t conditioned to repeatedly perform these movements without strain or injury, your golf game will suffer. Golf workouts for winter is a great approach to taking advantage of the time you now have available to improve your golf since you’re not playing as much, if not at all. It’s a way to stay connected to your golf game when you’re not able to play due to the conditions (snow, temperatures, ice, etc.). Have you gone into depression mode when winter hits and you can’t play golf anymore? I know this use to happen to me until I finally moved to a year-round nice climate. This transition from playing golf regularly to not at all can be depressing. What do you do with all the time you now have since you’re not playing? The answer? Golf workouts for the winter! This is your “off-season” and like most athletes they work on their body’s to take their game to the next level. This is a time where you evaluate your game and work on your weaknesses. A common denominator for most golfers, especially senior golfers is “physical capabilities”. This is your current level of golf-specific strength and flexibility. It is highly unlikely you have no physical limitations in your golf swing. 80% or more of amateur golfers play with an injury during the season. This would tell me there is a physical issue. What better time than winter to do golf workouts to greatly improve this situation. There is no excuse. You’ve got the time and hopefully you’ve got the motivation to improve your game. You’ve just got to set up a game plan in regards to your golf workouts for winter. The first step is to get a physical evaluation done to diagnose your current level of fitness specific to golf. Once you’ve gotten your golf fitness evaluation, assess the areas that need the most work and spend the majority of your time on those areas. Most likely this would be flexibility and core strength. These are two very common areas that are lacking and can make the most impact on your golf improvement. You will be shocked at your progress if you stick with it through the entire winter. Golf swing problem and how to fix it

Having a golf swing problem and not being able to correct it is the norm these days. Millions of golfers every year walk off the course in frustration. They all have a golf swing problem and have tried to fix it the “traditional way”. What I mean…is going to an instructor who can very easily point out what the golfer is doing, but cannot necessarily get to the root of the problem. So many times the instructor will tell the golfer “he’s coming over the top” and that’s why he’s slicing the ball. Or maybe he’s got the “chicken wing” in his follow through. But what does all that mean if you can’t get to what’s the cause and effect of that golf swing problem? I’m here to tell you that many golf swing problems are caused by your body’s inability to perform optimal golf swing mechanics. Let me say that again. Your body is the culprit. If you don’t take a look at what the ‘physical’ issue is, you can take all the lessons you want and you will continue to have the same golf swing problem. Let me give you a specific example. You have a hard time staying “in your posture” during your golf swing. You’ve taken many lessons and your golf instructor keeps telling you “your coming out of your swing”. But what good is that if you don’t know why this is happening? I’ll give you one (of many) reasons why this could be happening! Your hamstrings (the back of your upper leg) are too tight AND week! This is a fact with the majority of golfers, especially the senior golfers. Golf posture requires a bending at the hips, which puts a strain on the hamstrings and low back. If your hamstrings are tight, they will send a message to your brain saying “I can’t hold this, get me out of this uncomfortable position”. Does that make sense? The other message your hamstrings might send is “I’m not strong enough to hold this position, I’m going bail out of this position”. This is a very common cause of “coming out of your golf swing”. But if you are not aware this is the cause, you will continue to take lessons and hear the same thing over and over again. You could have saved hundreds of dollars in lessons, just by stretching and strengthening your hamstrings specific to your golf posture. This is just one of many examples of how your body is what’s causing the golf swing problem. Once you take the approach that your body dictates your ability to swing correctly, you will be on your way to the best golf of your life. You will soon not have to worry about a golf swing problem anymore.

Whatever your level, with a custom golf club the aim is to ensure that if you do make a good swing, the club will be square at impact and should produce a straight shot. Custom Golf Club How To's: To custom fit your golf clubs, you need to know: your gender (male or female); your height in your stockings or socks; the distance from your wrist (where it bends) to the floor with your shoes off; your age; your handicap or skill level; how fast you swing a golf club; what club you use at the 150 yard marker. Gender is used to put you into the correct fitting scale for custom golf clubs. The golf industry uses different definitions of "standard length" for men and women. Your height and the distance in inches from your wrist to the floor are used together to determine the length of a custom golf club that is appropriate for you. The starting point for club length can vary up to 3 Ѕ-inch ranging from ladies to men plus 1 Ѕ-inch. A tall person with long arms can very easily require shorter clubs than an average height person with short arms. About 80 percent of golfers are standard length. Custom fitting can fix your slice. If you slice the ball it means that the toe of the club is leading into the ball which opens the face of the club. This will mean that the toe of the club will be slightly off the ground at address to compensate. There are different methods of fitting according to custom golf club manufacturers but ultimately they are all trying to improve your game. To begin with simple measurements such as wrist-to-floor, height and hand size are taken and will point you to the right size club and at what angle it should be to the ground. Then you will take a club and hit some balls. One method is to place impact tape on the bottom of the custom golf club and an impact board on the floor. It's a big misconception that custom fitting is only for good golfers. Anyone can benefit. That said, if you plan to upgrade a new set of clubs with the same manufacturer they may be able to adjust your old set to become custom golf clubs. Custom fitting won't cure all your bad shots. Coaching will sort that out. But if you do make a good swing, then the custom golf club will arrive correctly at impact and should produce a straight shot at your target. That alone will save shots during a round. Lastly, custom fitting is often free of charge. But it is usually on the condition that you buy some clubs once you've been fitted. So it really depends on what your budget is. If you're prepared to buy a new set of clubs it's definitely worth getting fitted.

The key to playing par golf is to focus on more than just golf techniques, and pay attention to your entire body. Fitness is key to any sport, whether you’re running up and down a basketball court, throwing a football or playing the links. Without a proper fitness routine, your body is not going to be able to deliver the results you need. When it comes to golf, there are four basic elements to good fitness: balance, flexibility, strength and endurance. You will want to assess how well you currently perform in each of these categories to determine how you should plan your fitness routine. If you find that one area poses difficulties for you, you will want to begin slowly in that area and work up to harder exercises and stretches.

As with any new fitness routine, make sure your doctor has cleared you to begin. Balance is essential in golf. Golfers who have exceptional balance will have more efficient reaction times and movement speed, because improved balance allows them to execute weight transfer and hip rotation without jeopardizing a stable address position. Flexibility allows your muscles to extend through their full range of motion when you swing; it is actually the single most important physical characteristic likely to influence your golf swing. If your body is tight in any one area, your swing is going to be hindered and swing compensations begin. Strength is what provides you with power behind your swing and distance to your drive. In addition, adding strength to your “golf muscles” will help prevent injury. In golf, focus on your “go” muscles and not your “show” muscles. Finally, endurance is what keeps your game in peak performance whether you are teeing off on the first hole or sinking a putt on the last hole.

If you have stamina and endurance, you can count on a good performance throughout your game and not worry about fatigue setting in midway through. All of these areas can be addressed through exercises and stretches incorporated into a fitness routine. Once your body can meet the demands of your golf game, you have a basis to build upon by perfecting techniques and skills. Together, these tasks will turn you into a par golfer.

History has it that the game of "golf" was born in 15th century Scotland. Then around 1744, the first rules of play were codified and established in Edinburgh by The Company of Gentlemen Golfers. Golf has become one of the most popular sports in the world; played in countries as far reaching as Mexico and Ireland, South Africa and China. And, of course, Scotland. And the world has not been the same since. It's come as no surprise that there are universities offering degrees in Golf. The best way a beginner can begin is by learning what NOT to do. So, for the novice getting started, the game entails entering a world with a rich and varied history, a major investment of time and money, a demanding physical and mental learning curve and last but not least - days with huge amounts of "FUN"! Now, don't go running out and spending a small fortune on things you don't know anything about. Such as course fees, golf lessons, and golf attire. Some courses are not worth the fee nor are the costs for equipment claiming to be of high quality. The clothes and lessons can also wait for a time. The newness and the joy of finding a sport that you can play alone, with friends and spouses, or even with the whole family is part of the excitement. Learning to play golf well can be an emotionally exhausting experience not to mention expensive. Take some time and do a bit of research. You'll not want to enter into this without being armed with what you need to know. Learn to take baby steps first and remember to have fun and not take yourself and everything else too serious. The pros will generally advise against spending too many weeks on the driving range at first, claiming you may develop some bad habits that are difficult to break once you start playing on the course. However, spending a bit of time on the driving range can be beneficial, helping to get the muscles moving, discovering if you've got any inclination or interest in the game and an idea of what and where to use what clubs. Find a cheap course and wear comfortable, baggy clothing that doesn't restrict your arms and shoulders. Save that $1,000 you'd spend on pants, shoes, and shirts for later. To start use a simple three club set you can borrow from a friend or use a clubhouse rental. A Nine iron, a wedge, and a Number 5 wood is plenty. Actually the wedge won't get much use on a driving range, but you can add a putter and move to the putting practice area later. Some have miniature versions of sand traps to practice escaping. Take it easy, watch those who hit well and imitate their grip, stance, and posture. Tee up, keep your eye on the ball as you swing, and give it a firm whack. If you miss a few, so be it. Have Fun. You're teaching your body what the swing feels like, what angle and impact produces what kind of flight.. On the putting green, start very close to the hole — no more than a couple of feet. When you can make 25 putts in a row more or less consistently, move back to six feet, 10 feet, 20 feet — no farther. 'More or less' consistently — even the pros sometimes miss a two-footer! Whether driving or putting, stand so that a casual push wouldn't knock you over. Golf is about balance, concentration, and some simple physics. Now, go have a cool drink in the clubhouse and enjoy the day.

Finding out your “physical and mental limitations” is the first step towards a lifelong better game of golf. Once you find out what’s keeping you (which is quite easy) from making that perfect swing, you can set up a game plan to improve it. It may be a flexibility or a matter of adjustment or changes and even mental issues, or it may be a strength issue. But either way, you’ve got to find out what it is. Even veteran golfers are not spared from this. Is golf training program really works?

The most common issue (especially for the older golfer) is flexibility. Not being able to rotate your body fully on the backswing (this may even injure your back or spine) , creating that power and torque for maximum clubhead speed. If your back swing is cut short, you may even LOSE yards on your drives! And I say again; no amount of lessons or hitting balls will make that any better. You’ve got to do specific golf stretches to improve this limitation. Now on the other side of these limiting factors is strength, specific to golf. And one of the most common limitations is weak the back of the upper leg. The role of this is critical. It allows you to maintain your golf posture throughout the swing and for 18 holes.

It prevents undo strain on your lower back. And can give you a steady, comfortable position while putting. If your hamstrings are weak, I can almost say with certainty, you’ve got some low-back pain or injury. This is prevalent in older golfers and even the younger ones too. Back pain is the number reason to keep a golfer from playing his/her best. Have you ever walked off the course with your back in pain? I’m sure at one time or another you have. You can't just enjoy this game of golf, if your hamstring is weak.

Using a golf fitness video is a great alternative to going to a gym. Just think of the time you’re saving not worrying about what you where or how you look; or driving 20 to 30 minutes to your local gym; and then showering, changing and getting back home. Golfers are realizing that a golf fitness video is a great shortcut to a better game, quickly. The great thing is…you don’t have to be young or fit to do it. I have golfers who are in their 70’s doing my golf fitness videos. When you’re researching golf fitness videos, there are several things to keep in mind. There should be easy to follow demonstrations of every golf exercise. This is separate from the workout component of the golf fitness video. You want a menu that is user-friendly and easy to move around to the different sections of the golf fitness video. But what you are really paying for is the golf fitness workout itself. There should be a component of the golf fitness video that takes you through the entire golf fitness session, from start to finish.

This way it’s like having the trainer right in your home. I have seen hundreds of fitness videos that do not take you through the entire routine. They are pieced together and leave you trying to figure out what to do with it. Another important point. Watch out for the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. This is not what you want. You want to be lead through a golf fitness routine that is suitable for your current level of fitness, age and abilities. If your starting point is a little lower, then a golf fitness dvd that is more challenging will only promote you to fail. I’ve seen this time and time again. On the other hand, if you are an experienced exerciser, you want a golf fitness video that is more challenging than a beginner (novice) one. One that will challenge your core stabilization, balance, coordination and muscular endurance. Don't be overwhelmed! But making the right choice will dictate the ultimate success of your program. So make sure to thoroughly read over all the information pertaining to that golf fitness video before you buy it.
